DATA DIVE: AIRLINE INDUSTRY COVID CRASH
A data-driven research project analyzing how global pandemics reshape the financial performance of the airline and healthcare industries.
Using historical financial data from 2005–2018, the study evaluates key industry metrics including profitability, liquidity, leverage, asset efficiency, and equity performance to understand how major pandemics influence sector-level dynamics.
The analysis incorporates historical outbreaks such as SARS, H5N1, H1N1, MERS-CoV, and Ebola, revealing a consistent inverse relationship between the performance of airline and healthcare companies during global health crises.
Results showed that pandemic events systematically reduce airline profitability, asset turnover, and liquidity due to travel restrictions and demand collapse, while simultaneously accelerating investment and capital inflows into the healthcare sector.
The research also identified oil price volatility and fuel hedging exposure as major amplifiers of financial stress for airlines during external shocks.
By combining macroeconomic analysis with financial ratio modeling, the project demonstrates how pandemics act as systemic shocks that rapidly propagate through capital markets and industry balance sheets.
The findings provide investors and analysts with a data-driven framework for evaluating sector performance during global crises, highlighting the structural vulnerability of capital-intensive industries such as aviation.
